The Unmaking of a Hollywood Therapist Annie Coe Toor 9780692752418 Books Reviews
What a joy to have read this book. Anne Coe Toor writes in such a genuine and descriptive way. She's lived quite an amazing life and gives the reader a good sense of what it was like to experience what she has.....She's got a wonderful way of making you feel connected to her story.
I truly enjoyed this book. Many life lessons to be learned here.
You really should read it.
Annie Coe Toor led an exemplary life. She was a sought-after psychologist, specializing in assisting those with stress in the film business. She loved her practice and her patients. After Hurricane Katrina, she went to help the Red Cross in New Orleans. Six years passed, and she reconnected with a friend from that experience, and after meeting for drinks (wine), she headed home. She was stopped for suspicion of DUI, and did indeed get convicted, ultimately losing her license to practice therapy.
Annie lets it all be exposed here the shock of being arrested and treated like any other criminal, her pain and shame, as well as the exact words of her dismissal by the governing body of therapists, published in their monthly magazine for all her colleagues to read. It took great courage and self-examination to write this book. I can see it becoming mainstream, recommended reading by any organization involved in helping recovering alcoholics. It's also a cautionary tale for the rest of us that drinking and driving can change your life forever, even when no accident is involved. .
Mrs. Toor may have lost a lot, but she gained a lot, and she passes it along for others’ benefit.
This is a book all should read, how often have we found ourselves on this side of the justice system. She has tackled this wonderfully and written in an enjoyable and enticing way. Congratulations and recommend to all.
This autobiographical story is a very moving account of an English rose with a dream, a dream of a new and more fulfilling life in a far off land, California. Through trials and tribulations she achieves her dream. The book is beautifully constructed and a real page turner. I was enchanted by her account of a whirlwind encounter with Orson Wells. Despite the 'unmaking' of the title, this a story of great courage and achievement and I look forward to more writing by this gifted author.
This fascinating memoir is must reading for anyone interested in Hollywood and therapy. Annie Coe Toor tells her improbable tale of immigrating to America from Britain and working on movie sets with legendary directors and larger-than-life characters. Later she heads back to school and writes her thesis on the film industry before forging her way into the top ranks of Beverly Hills therapists. Her story is filled with cinematic moments discovery, joy, tragedy, sadness, transformation and finally renewal. What stands out here is her integrity, intelligence and acceptance of the many fates and quirks of life. This isn’t so much a tell-all from the land of bright lights as it is a story of the challenges facing a young woman in search of herself and her growth along the path to healing others. All set against the sunny backdrop of southern California.
Delightfully and smartly written, Annie Coe Toor has had a remarkable life and lives to tell the tale.
For me this book has a new title "The Making of a Hollywood Writer". It is an invocation to live life to the fullest despite any obstacles.
